For newer or unconfident dentists · ongoing 1:1 support
2013. My dad handed me a central incisor and walked off.
As a new associate, nobody is coming to readily help. That was the new reality, and that central incisor was the moment I understood it.
What DF year prepares you for
The clinical basics, under supervision, with a safety net that catches most things before they become a problem. That part works. Nobody's arguing with it.
What it doesn't
The first year you're genuinely on your own. The case that makes you sit with the notes after everyone's gone home. Ten years of watching foundation dentists come through, and that year is the one nobody structures anything around.

The Endo Day
Mentorship
Want both? Mentees get a reduced rate on the Endo Day.
Get in touchPrivate patient, his patient, someone he'd looked after for years. He was winding down toward retirement. I was fresh out of maxfax SHO and community dental — fourteen months of suturing drunks at 2am and fitting dentures. Zero endo. Not one root canal in over a year. I said yes because he was my dad and you don't say no to your dad.
In DF year there's always someone — a trainer, a colleague, a phone call you can make without it feeling like an admission. Then one day there isn't, and nobody tells you exactly when that changes.
The tooth is still there, by the way. Twelve years on. My endo, intact.
The Endo Day, in full
HEIW has had me teaching endodontics, composite, and tooth wear across Wales for six years now. That's a lecture. This is different — a full day in the surgery, hands-on, on a case you'll actually see on Monday.
Small groups, run in-house at Kandy Lodge. No hotel conference room, no forty people watching a screen from the back row. You're at the microscope, doing the work.
You leave with a technique you can actually use on Monday's list — not a folder of notes for the shelf.
Running now — Friday one-to-one
This is already happening, most Fridays. One-to-one time at the microscope — your own cases if you want to bring them, Q&A, case discussion, a live demo if that's what actually answers the question. No structured curriculum, no cohort. Just hand-held time with someone who's been through the year you're in.
Mentorship, in full
Not a course. A monthly call, an annual pair of in-person days, and someone on the other end of a message when a case doesn't sit right.
Ten years of formal foundation training sits behind this too, not just Friday sessions and good intentions — see where the last ten foundation dentists have gone →
We rotate through the things that actually catch people out after DF: restorative decisions, perio, endo, full mouth rehab and treatment planning, the business and contract stuff nobody teaches you. Not a fixed syllabus — the cases you bring set the agenda, and if you haven't got one that month I'll bring one of mine, there's always two or three complex cases running through my own list. Some topics, occlusion being the obvious one, run over several sessions rather than being ticked off in one.
Text me whenever something's bothering you — ten o'clock on a Monday, whenever. I'm not going to reply at ten o'clock on a Monday. I'll get to it at lunch, or when I've actually got five minutes to give you a proper answer, not just a quick one.
£175 a month. For most self-employed associates that's a deductible running cost, same category as your indemnity or your lab bill — so the real cost to you is lower than the number on the page. Two in-person days a year included.
It starts with a conversation, not a commitment. Fifteen minutes, no charge — so you know exactly what this involves before anything's agreed, and I get a proper sense of what you're actually finding hard right now. Register below and that's the call we'll have.
Want a Friday session? Just ask — no form needed.
